Texas Tech junior Sofia Garcia was named the Big 12 Golfer of the Month for March on Wednesday after recording her fifth career individual title as well as another top-five finish.
This is the third career monthly accolade for Garcia, which marks the most for a Red Raider since the award was created in 2002. She was previously recognized by the league office in October 2018 and then again in March 2019.
The month of March will likely be one Garcia remembers for the remainder of her career as she not only won her school record fifth tournament but also competed in the prestigious Augusta National Women's Amateur held last week. Tech also celebrated two team titles to start the month.
The Red Raiders enjoyed victories at both the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational and the BYU Spring Classic, marking the first time Tech had claimed the top spot in back-to-back tournament since the spring of 2011. It marked only the second time Tech had done so under head coach JoJo Robertson.
Garcia finished at par or better in four of five rounds during the month en route to winning the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational, which pushed her past former teammate Gabby Barker atop the school record book for individual wins. She added another top-five showing a week later after finishing tied for third at the BYU Spring Classic.
Garcia missed Tech's final event of the month as her travel itinerary to Augusta conflicted with the Bruzzy Challenge. The Red Raiders still managed a runner-up finish at the tournament, topping seven teams ranked in the top 50 of the Golfstat poll in the process.
Robertson will have Garcia back in the lineup this weekend when the Red Raiders open the Cowgirl Match Play event hosted by Oklahoma State. Tech will be paired against the host Cowgirls in Sunday's opening match before facing Oklahoma and Tulsa on Monday.
Live coverage of the match play format will be available via Golfstat.com.
