LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball’s Mason Montgomery and Patrick Monteverde were recognized by the conference office for their play last week as Montgomery was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week while Monteverde was tabbed Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.

The Red Raiders have now racked up six Big 12 weekly awards this season. Montgomery is the first Red Raider to earn Pitcher of the Week this season. Meanwhile, it’s the second Newcomer of the Week award for Monteverde.

The left-handers combined to allow one run on four hits in 13.2 innings of work in their weekend starts to help the Red Raiders claim a series win at West Virginia. They combined for 19 strikeouts and four walks while limiting the Mountaineers to 4-for-45 (.089) hitting.

Montgomery (2-1) struck out a career-high 12 batters to earn the win in the rubber match on Sunday. It matched the most strikeouts by a pitcher in a Big 12 game this season and the most by a Red Raider in a conference battle since Bobby Duran in 2010. The Leander native sat down the first five batters of the game and retired the first 10 Mountaineers in order. He finished with one run allowed on two hits in 6.2 innings.

Monteverde (6-1) posted seven shutout innings in the series opener on Friday night. He allowed just two hits and struck out seven, posting the league’s best opponent’s batting average for the week of .087. It was the fifth time this season the southpaw has struck out at least seven hitters as he improved his record to a league-best 6-1.

The Red Raiders are back in action on Tuesday as they take on Oklahoma in a non-conference matchup in Amarillo, Texas. First pitch at HODGETOWN is set for 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
